A Scene: The Lamp Inside

Αγαπητοί συνοδηπόροι — Dear fellow travelers

Higher up we sat where we could watch the sun come out from behind the mountains of an island, far off on the horizon.

He picked up a stone. Round, palm-sized, almost a perfect sphere. He turned it over for a while, then held it out to me.

“This is, let us say, whole-consciousness.”

A pause.

“This is, let us say, the universe.”

— Elder Petros

Now think of two points inside it, he said. Join them. There is your linear mind: the first impression of awareness of reality.

Now four points. A plane formed inside the sphere. Now eight. A cube, which turned in my soul into a solid made of condensed ideas.

Bring the eight points out to the surface of the sphere, he told me. Whatever surrounds the lines joining those eight points is mid-consciousness.

“If the small cube is a person’s awareness of this world, then our obligation is to reach the illumination of the whole interior of the sphere.”

— Elder Petros

The lucidity of it was mesmerising. I had been living the answer, not being told it.

Good journey, Fellow Traveler
